And Still…

Bilal scores a convincing win over former WBA champion Giovanni de Coralis at Club Punchbowl.

Club Punchbowl in Sydney – In what is arguably the biggest victory of his growing career, super middleweight Bilal Akkawy (17-0-1, 14 KOs) made a good enough statement for a bump in the world rankings with a ten round unanimous decision over former WBA “regular” champion Giovanni De Carolis (25-9-1, 13 KOs). Right from round 1 plenty of leather was thrown in true gladiatorial style which no-one was willing to take a backward step. As a result, a clash of heads was eminent due to plenty close in-fighting which fortunately did not produce any claret. Referee Justin Kennedy then stunned the crowd and Italian fighter with a point deduction for his continual holding at the end of round 4. This spurred him on even more but Akkawy kept his cool and kept busy to bag more rounds under his belt. The best was yet to come and both boys gave their all in the last round. As the scores were read out, (99-90, 99-90, 100-89) a dejected de Coralis camp knew the fight wasn’t theirs but graciously accepted defeat and congratulated the WBA Oceania champion Bilal Akkawy. De Carolis has now lost three of his last four bouts and at 33 years old the Italian veteran may have to rethink his career.
