New Cruiserweight Champ Crowned
Sat 5th of June Ex WBA Oceania champ and world title contender Kane Watts squared off against Queenslander Daniel Russell for the vacant WBA Oceania Cruiserweight title at the Melbourne Pavilion. In a seesaw tussle, Watts got the better of Russell by knocking him down in the 5th round and applied plenty of pressure on the tough Queenslander throughout the fight. Experienced judge Lynne Kennedy saw the fight in Watts favour 96-93 while the 2 other judges had Russell edging out a split decision 94-95 and a questionable 96-93 scorecard. Maybe the accidental head clash in the 1st round which lead to blood streaming in Watts vision all night was a factor or maybe Russell knew that a title was on the line but one thing was for sure, the crowd certainly got theirs money worth in a great fight.
